Therapy is a deeply personal experience and the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. It’s not just about finding someone with the right credentials. It’s about finding someone who helps you feel safe enough to show up as yourself.
And here’s the thing: that connection doesn’t always happen instantly. Sometimes it takes a few sessions to settle in. But if something feels off for too long, it’s worth paying attention to.
So, how do you know if your therapist is the right fit?
First, you should feel like you can be honest, even about the hard stuff. You don’t have to feel 100% comfortable right away, but you should feel a sense of emotional safety. A good therapist helps you feel seen and heard, even when you’re not sure how to explain what’s going on.
You should also feel respected. That means no judgment, no pressure to move faster than you’re ready for, and no sense that you have to “perform” or say the right things. Therapy isn’t about impressing someone. It’s about being real, messy, uncertain, imperfect, and human.
Sometimes people stay in therapy with someone out of guilt or obligation, even when it’s not working. You’re allowed to outgrow a therapist. You’re allowed to want something different. And you’re allowed to say, “I don’t think this is the right match,” and seek out someone new.
At Verge, we believe fit matters. We do our best to pair clients with therapists whose style, personality, and approach align with what you’re looking for. And if the first match isn’t the right one? We’ll help you explore other options, no shame, no hard feelings.
Therapy should feel like a partnership. Your therapist brings their training and insight, and you bring your lived experience. Together, you can do incredible work, but only if the connection feels solid.
If something feels off, trust yourself. If something feels right, trust that too.
Not sure if your current therapist is the right fit or starting fresh and want help finding the right one? We’re here to guide you. Reach out for a consult and let’s find someone who feels like a true match.
